Day 3 -Sigiriya (aka Lions Rock)

In the morning, we depart for Sigiriya where on arrival I climbed the 5th century rock fortress built by King Kashyapa (477-495 AD),  now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Also known as the Lions Rock, Sigiriya is an impressive site from a distance, rising 200 metres from the jungle. With hundreds of steps to climb to reach the top, the view from above over the surrounding landscape is incredible. Here you can also see the world-renowned frescoes of the ‘Heavenly Maidens’ of Sigiriya which are in a sheltered pocket of the rock approached by a spiral stairway.
