After a while instead of following the whales, we decided to give them a rest from us, and got back on the boat. I really like that our guide, Tris, watched the whale’s behavior closely, if she senses that we were disturbing them or they were becoming agitated by us, then she instructed us back to the boat. We didn’t want to wear out our welcome.

Day #1 - Ha'apai, Tonga – Momma with Curious but Standoffish Baby
Within 30 minutes after breakfast on the first day we were in the water viewing a mom and her baby. The baby was playful, but a bit standoffish. Admittingly, I was very caution around them. It was my first experience swimming with humpback whale at such close proximity. I was afraid they would rise from the depths and maybe not see us and swim into us. But after awhile it became apparent they were fully aware of their spatial proximity relative to us.
