Nyiragongo Volcano

Nyiragongo is a stratovolcano and is the world’s largest lava lake with a diameter of 200m, which can be viewed from the rim of the crater. The crater spans 1 to 1.2 km in diameter and is about 900m deep. The hike up Nyiragongo was tough, especially the last half an hour, but we were rewarded with a mesmerizing view of the largest lava lake in the world. The shelters are conveniently based at the edge of the summit enabling us to view the lava lake throughout the day and night.

During our hike a number of security forest ranger accompanied us, along with 2 cooks for a group of 8.  We each had our own porter.
